Howard Eaton of Eaton Properties built out house on Lake Burton. Anyone who has ever built a custom home will attest that this is a difficult process given the thousands of decisions that need to be made and, often, the limited amount of time and information with which to make such decisions. The challenges of building are exacerbated when the building site is two hours removed.

Howard made the process as easy as it can possible be. Because of Howard’s experience building high-end custom homes he had the timeline down to a science and as a result we always had more than adequate lead-time to investigate various alternatives. Howard was also very helpful in directing us to quality subcontractors and otherwise providing advice to assist us in our various decisions ranging from the type of lighting system to use throughout the house-to the type of doors-to door knobs. We also went out of our way to complicate the process by sourcing a lot of our own specialty materials such as all the flooring (hardwood and stone), all the interior trim and all the paneling as well as the windows throughout the house. Howard was able to work with our suppliers and make adjusts in the work schedule when any supplier missed a delivery deadline.

As the designer/architects of our home, I think we proved to particularly challenging clients. At one instance we decided at the last minute to add a wine cellar. Howard did the additional excavation and poured the walls as the rest of the foundation was being poured. We also decided to add a loft, bedroom and bath (not to mention a staircase) while on vacation and ask Howard to stop the framing process until we returned and could make the additional design changes. He was able to accommodate our request.

Finally (and perhaps most importantly) – cost. We created a budget for the house and Howard stuck to it. Sure, there were overruns but that was always due to the fact that we decided to upgrade our decision on some items. The results are that we have one of the most spectacular homes on Lake Burton that displays quality everywhere you look.
